A Burlington, Vt., man was in custody Thursday after allegedly killing his wife with a meat cleaver and critically injuring his mother-in-law, police said.
Aita Gurung, 34, returned home Thursday afternoon after voluntarily admitting himself to a hospital for a mental-health evaluation, the Burlington Free Press reported.
Gurung had called police Saturday about his mental state in regard to his relationship with his wife, Yogeswari Khadka, 32, police Chief Brandon del Pozo said.
An ambulance was sent and Gurung was admitted to the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Thursday’s attack began shortly after Gurung was released. The violence took place at the family home and ended outside, with one armed neighbor intervening and detaining Gurung until police arrived, del Pozo said.
Khadka died from severe head injuries, including wounds to her skull, arms and hands.
Gurung’s mother-in-law was in a hospital Thursday night for injuries suffered during the attack. She was in critical condition, officials said.
Gurung was being held on suspicion of second-degree murder and attempted murder, the Free Press reported. He was expected to be arraigned Friday.
The couple have and 8-year-old child who was at school when the attack took place.
